Community Garden Update

May 13th, 2010

Soil testing was done by the Council in January this year on the Old  Mt Eden womens bowling green and it was found to have a high level of  carcinogenic contaminants.  This report was presented to the Eden/ Albert Community Board in March.

They been trying to decide what to  do with the site, ie: decontaminate it or not. The Community Garden group are still interested in the site and have been fundraising to put in raised beds with a barrier (Geotextile) that would prevent any contamination between the growing medium and the green. We still hope to establish a Community Garden in Mt Eden.

Community Garden

March 11th, 2010

Updates from Michelle:

The Mt Eden Community Gardening Group and the Hand Weavers and Spinner Guild submitted our lease application to the Auckland City Council at the end of February.

The next step is to prepare a submission to the Arts, Sports and Recreation Committee in April to support our application. We are also going to do a visit to other Community Gardens in the area to start planning how we will use the land if we are successful.

As part of the planning we will need to get a soil analysis done as the ground was a former bowling green to identify any hazardous residues. We have been in talks with a specialist at the Manukau City Council who has already been through the same scenario and will be advising us on how to deal with any residues. So hopefully we will gain access to the land this year and start a Community Garden.

Mt Eden Community Garden group to become an incorporated society

February 16th, 2010

News from the Community Garden Group:

“The group who formed the Mt Eden Community Garden group have decided to become an incorporated society. We met with the council last week to find out if they would allow us (the Mt Eden Community Garden group & Hand Weavers & Spinners Guild) to jointly apply for a lease of 25 Poronui Street before our incorporation had come through. We got a definitive no. Both entities had to have a legal entity. A solution was offered that the Garden Group would join the Spinners and Weavers Guild and they would have part of their objectives would be to pursue organic gardening and to grow dye plants. We are now applying under the Hand Weavers & Spinners Guild for the lease. We have gained letters of support from various organisations- noteably Friends of Maungawhau, Mount Eden Village People, Disabled Citizens Centre, Lynda Hallinan- NZ Gardener so far.”
