People of Auckland are gathering for a day of action to show our concern about the state of the planet and send a message to our leaders that we want action on climate change Saturday 24th September: the day of the All Blacks/ France game!
Dress up as your favourite fossil fuel alternative. Let’s create a visual spectacle of human wind turbines, electric train drivers etc. Or keep it simple and decorate yourself with the unifying symbol for the worldwide Moving Planet day: arrows to symbolise moving away from fossil fuels.
Those that are biking are meeting on at 11am at Wynyard Quarter playground for a moving planet bikeride. All those with two (or one) wheels are welcome to join.
Non-bikers will join the riders at 1pm at QEII Square on two feet, skateboards, tricycles, roller skates or roller blades. We will march together up Queen Street to demonstrate together how much we need action on climate change- it a message to our leaders and peers that this IS important!
We’ll finish at Albert Park, where we will have a picnic, with vegetarian food available to purchase.
There’ll be music and kids entertainment too.
Come join us and show your support for New Zealand to move beyond fossil fuels – make your voice heard!

Yesterday we inaugurated the Mt Eden Community Garden in style. Over a hundred adults, children and dogs turned up to celebrate and help muck in at the 10.10.10 global environmental awareness day.
The event kicked off with Brian collecting food scraps from 3 local cafes (Frasers, The Essential Deli, KC Loo and Chapter) with a bicycle and trailer provided by Adventure Bikes. The speeches started at 2:30 and Michele together with Ken Clarke (of Square Foot Gardening fame) officially opened the garden at 2:45. The first seedlings were planted by Scott from CCS Community Garden, Donna from Mt Eden Bowling Club and Kevin from FriendlyPak.
Since it was a community day, we did a little exercise where we split up into groups, introduced ourselves and discussed what we individually and collectively could do to make our lives more sustainable. 286
The fun for the kids cracked off with an awesome “interactive and educational” treasure hunt, expertly run by Candice. I can honestly say I’ve never seen kids so engrossed in learning about what can and can’t be put in the compost. And Candice made it so fun and exciting, helped of course by prizes from The Candy Man, Mainly Toys and Eden Pools.
While all this was happening, the oldies were kept busy with yummy nibbles and refreshments care of The Essential Deli and a highly informative Composting Workshop held by Anthony.
Raffle tickets were sold with the lucky winners receiving prizes from Molten, Frasers, City Cake Company and Chapter. We also raised money by selling gardening tools. The total raised on the day was $286.
Thanks to all who helped behind the scenes and of course everyone who came and made it a thoroughly enjoyable day.
