We would like to thank Steve and his team from Civic Video Mt Eden for his ongoing support for our work to establish a battery collection station. The batteries we collect get sorted with alkaline batteries going into a concrete container to avoid the leaking of toxic materials and others having metals extracted and recycled. We see our project as educating and encouraging community members to buy reusable batteries and recycle single-use batteries.
We collect around 8-15kg of batteries each week which we have been dropping off to Sony. Interwaste provides recycling to Sony with the cost $5.50 per Kg. We have approached the Auckland council and local board to help find a solution but there has been no solution found.
We also would like to thank everyone who dropped off batteries for recycling at our collection station for the last 3 years.
We ask that the government works with producers of batteries to provide free battery recycling in communities. Please sign our online petitio.

We are organising a community fruit tree planting day on Sunday 5 August, at 1 pm. This is a great opportunity to meet likeminded people, learn how to plant a fruit tree, and help to provide free fruit trees for Aucklanders.
Meet at 1pm at the end of Poronui Stree Road. Please wear sturdy shoes and suitable clothing, and bring gardening gloves
and a spade. Please let us know if you’re coming: Contact Judith Holtebrinck: Judith@mountedenvillagepeople.co.nz
Home made “Linzer Torte “will be available for all helpers. This is a family event so please bring your children your children’s friends, parents and
grant parents along. The fruit tree are getting planted next to the playground at the end of Poronui street.

Based on a trial project funded by the old Albert Eden Board in 2008, where we received funding for our project to plant community fruit trees with council in parks and reserves and on grass verges, community groups can now plant fruit trees in council appointed local parks and reserves.
Our vision for this year was to hand out 1000 fruit trees for Auckland. We are pleased that with the support from the New Zealand Lottery Board, local shops and donations made on our website we can now provide 600 fruit trees. This is where the trees go will:
500-550 Fruit trees for schools and kindergartens and individuals:
Schools, kindergartens and individuals who registered on our website and have been notified by us can pick up their free fruit trees on Sunday 29 of July from 1-3.30 pm at the Mt Eden Village centre.
30-50 Fruit trees for Auckland’s Transition Town groups:
Over the year we have been closely working with other Transition Town groups to make our communities more sustainable. Having free, fresh food growing in our city is part of the vision to support communities in the future and we are therefore happy to supply Grey Lynn 2030, Grow Sandringham, TT Kingsland, TT Pt Chev and TT Devonport with fruit trees for their local parks. Thank you for everyone’s support and patience on this project, we are very excited to get started and plant fruit trees together.
30 Fruit trees for Mt Eden village
We collected enough funds from our local shops to buy 30 community fruit trees that will be planted in parks and reserves close to the village with help from council arborists. Planting day is Sunday 08.08.2012 at 1pm. Home baked Linzer torte will be provided for fruit tree planters on the day. If you are free to join us please contact us.
A big thank you to our local shops and businesses for the trees:
